How to brief
a factory.

You will get a faster, better and cheaper quotation if you send the right things first time. This is what the right things are, in the order they matter.

Before you enquire

Five things to have ready.

01

The garment and the quantity

Per design, not in total. Shirts in five different sizes carrying the same artwork are one design, not five. A long list of designs in small runs is a very different order to one design in bulk, and it prices differently.

02

Artwork, or something like it

A vector file is ideal. A phone photo of last season, a competitor link or a hand sketch are all workable. A written description alone is the slowest route because it takes a round trip to interpret.

03

A size split, or a body chart

Either how many of each size, or the measurements you want us to build to. If you have neither, say so and we will propose a standard grade for you to react to.

04

The date it must be in your hands

Not the date you would like it. The real date. That single number decides whether we quote air or sea, and whether the timeline is honest at all.

05

Your branding intention

Whether you want your own woven labels and packaging from the first order, or whether you are testing the product first. It changes the quotation.

How minimums actually work.

A minimum is per design, not per order, and mixed sizes inside one design all count toward it. The reason is setup: a colourway has to be printed, a marker has to be laid and a machine has to be threaded whether you order a handful or a thousand.

That is also why the unit price falls steeply over the first few hundred pieces and then flattens. If you are close to a break point we will tell you where it is rather than letting you order just underneath it.

Knitted items such as socks, caps and beanies carry higher minimums than cut and sewn garments, because the machine setup per colourway is a larger share of the job.

Planning the timeline backwards.

Start from the date the kit has to be in hand and work back: freight, bulk production, sample approval, sampling, and quotation. Sample approval is the stage buyers underestimate, because it depends on how quickly you respond, not on how quickly we work.

Air freight is faster and costs more per kilo. Sea freight makes sense above roughly three hundred kilograms, and it needs a much longer runway. Deciding this early changes what we can promise.

What is included

    Questions worth asking any factory.

Message the floor directly if yours is not covered here.

Are you a factory or an agent?

Ask it directly of anyone you approach, and ask for a video call from the floor. An agent placing your order elsewhere is not necessarily a problem, but you should know which you are dealing with before something goes wrong.

What happens if the sample is wrong?

Find out how many revisions are included and who pays for the next one before you commit. Ours includes two.

    Who owns the pattern?

If you paid for the pattern development, establish in writing that the pattern and artwork are yours. Ours are held against your account and are not reused.

You now know what to ask a factory.

Ask us. Send the brief you would send anyone else and judge the answer against everything on this page.
